News - NASA Engineer Visits Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron, 31 August 2009

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – On August 27, 2009 a real, full-size space suit, a multitude of space accessories, and a very exciting presentation was the reward that met all who attended NASA Engineer Lindsay Aitchison’s presentation, hosted by the Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron. Located in Wichita Falls, Texas, the unit is a member of Group II, Texas Wing , Civil Air Patrol.

The event took place in a small auditorium, made available courtesy of Professor Pat Mitchell, chair of the mathematics department, Midwestern State University. Attendees included members of Southwest Region, Texas Wing, and Goup II as well as squadron members and their families.

Opening the program, Capt. Randy Stafford -- the squadron commander -- called for the presentation of the colors. The Color Guard, from the South Ft. Worth Composite Squadron, was composed of Cadet 2nd Lt. James Staud, Cadet Airman Basic Jennifer Aguilar, Cadet Airman Alex Ellison, and Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Bradley Wabbersen. Judge Woody Gosson pronounced the invocation.

Aitchison, a former Civil Air Patrol Cadet and Wichita Falls native, has been a NASA engineer for seven years. She is currently assigned to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where she has an important role in the Moon exploration program. She is Project Engineer and Lunar Configuration Lead for the Constellation Space Suit System Pressure Garment Subsystem, a crucial component of the space agency’s Constellation Program which is intended to take our nation's flag back to the Moon.

Aitchison shared her experiences at NASA and covered the history of the agency’s spacesuits, from the early years of Project Mercury to the upcoming Constellation Program.”It is all a team effort,” she emphasized. Then added, “Besides the astronaut program, NASA has many different job opportunities, ranging from engineering to administration.“

After the presentation, senior members, cadets, and guests asked many questions, especially on how to handle the different pieces of space hardware. “I really enjoyed the evening, and Lindsay was such an exciting person,” said Cadet Airman 1st Class Madison Roach.

After Aitchison’s presentation, the color guard retired the colors and the evening proceedings were closed. Immediately thereafter, Mrs. Olson, a friend of Aitchison's, offered her home for socializing and cake. “It was delicious,” said Cadet Ellison.
