News - A Cadet's Introduction to the Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron, 21 September 2009

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – On Aug. 13, 2009, I turned twelve, and it was my first day being a Civil Air Patrol cadet. I was shaking and writing on my hand, I was so nervous, I didn't know if I was going to fit in or not; would I be included or left out? Soon I was asked to join in the Opening Drill. All of a sudden good  feelings of pride to serve my Country and my community replaced all that anxiety.

The second day of being a cadet with the Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron was at Sheppard Air Force Base. It was PT day. I tried to run a mile but didn't make it. "Maybe I need to lay off the salad dressing," I thought. I made the sit-ups and push-ups requirements, I enjoyed the physical activity. I appreciated the encouragement of the other cadets when I was trying to cover the last few feet of the mile. They cheered for me.

The third day of being a cadet was the SAREX at Kickapoo Airport in Wichita Falls. Our Squadron was the host unit, but I was invited by Major Workman and his crew, who were doing the mission, the Diamondback Composite Squadron. I took some tests that were hard, some I had to retake, and managed to get through them in time to participate with the ground mission looking for the ELT beacon signals.

To find the beacon you had to use this El-Per. You could walk around with it and search for ELT beacon signals. Later I was writing down what the pilots said over the radio. I had to give the notes to the staff, they put it in as a task, and someone pin-pointed it on the white-board. Later, Capt. Sandra Smith showed me how to enter information into the computer for everyone signing in and out.

My fourth Day was a NASA presentation for Aerospace Day that our Squadron had hosted at Midwestern State University. It was a chance to see a space suit that wasn't in a case or on TV. We got to feel the materials used for the astronaut suit, and the gloves made special for dexterity.

Fifth day as a cadet, I took my first Leadership test and got a 92%. I want to be a Flight-line Marshaller now. Maybe after a while as a Cadet, I will learn how to do other things as well.
