News - Texas Wing's Visit to Congress, 25 February 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Texas Wing Commander Col. Joe R. Smith, Southwest Region Director of Administration/Personnel Maj. Harriet Smith, Group IV Vice-Commander Maj. Bob Beeley, and North Carolina Wing Cadet Col. Jeremiah Coogan went to the Nation's Capital to visit with Texas legislators, inform them about Texas Wing's contribution to their constituents and the State of Texas, and explore their interest in becoming honorary members of the Civil Air Patrol through induction into the Congressional Squadron.

Although Cadet Coogan is not a member of Texas Wing, CAP NHQ assigned him to the Texas Wing group because he had participated in an encampment in Texas Wing and, therefore, was familiar with the wing. His role was to represent all Texas Wing cadets.

The group got photographed while visiting with Congressman Henry Cuellar (28th District of Texas), Congresswoman Kay Granger (12th District of Texas), Congressman Pete Olson (22nd District of Texas), and Congressman Solomon Ortiz (27th District of Texas).

Visiting with Congressman Henry Cuellar, who represents the 28th District of Texas. On the photo (L-R) Maj. Bob Beeley, Col. Joe R. Smith, Congressman Cuellar, and Cadet Col. Jeremiah Coogan.

In addition to visiting the congressmen shown in the photos above, Col. Smith and Maj. Beeley I also visited with:

  • Maj. Keithen Washington, military legislative fellow to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, who represents the 18th District of Texas. The Congresswoman's official website may be found at http://www.jacksonlee.house.gov/ ;

  • Mr. Gerardo Interiano, Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressman Lamar Smith, who represents the 21st District of Texas. The Congressman's official website may be found at http://lamarsmith.house.gov/ ;

  • Mr. Jeffrey Abramowitz, Legislative Assistant to Senator John Cornyn. The Senator's official website may be found at  http://cornyn.senate.gov/public/

Col. Joe R. Smith, Maj. Harriet Smith, and Maj. Bob Beeley met with Congressman Michael McCaul, who represents the 10th District of Texas. They were the Congressman's guests for dinner at the Capitol Hill Club. The Congressman's official website may be found at http://mccaul.house.gov/

The Texas Wing delegation was very well received by all whom they visited. This year, Texas Wing's legislative goals were:

  1. Restoration of Texas Wing's portion of the Air Force budget,

  2. Honoring CAP members who served during WWII,

  3. Have GAO study the most efficient use of CAP as a resource in Homeland Security missions, and

  4. Recruit new members for the Congressional Squadron.

Overall, a highly successful visit and a mission accomplished.

Maj. Arthur E. Woodgate, CAP, SWR Director of Public Affairs
