News - Group II Cadets Spend the Day in Wichita Falls, 3 August 2010

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – On Aug. 3, 2010, Group II cadets spent the day at Kickapoo Airport in Wichita Falls, busy with AEX projects, leadership, drill, emergency services, and fun. The Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron hosted the activity, under the supervision of Capt. Sandra Smith, Maj. Harriet Smith, Capt. Fletcher Sharp and Maj. Clare Phillips.

The participating squadrons were Plano Mustangs TX-051, Rio del Fierro TX-430, [ no such squadron TX-011 ], Texoma TX-262, South Ft. Worth TX-154, Mineral Wells TX-087, South Garland Lightning TX-038, Phoenix TX-388 and 441st Composite Squadrons; Frisco Cadet Squadron TX-389; and Sulphur Springs Senior Squadron TX-450. In all there were 25 cadets and 11 senior members and parents who attended.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., the cadets separated into two groups: Cadet Basics and Airmen in group 1 and Cadet Airmen First Class and above in group 2. Group 1 cadets did a basic stationary and moving drill, while group 2 cadets did an intermediate version of moving drill. After about an hour, the instructors decided to head back inside for a break, hydration, and to prepare for the next activity.

Group 1 cadets stayed inside for an AEX project, that consisted of making rockets with an ice cone, 4x4 paper, a camera capsule and Alka-Seltzer tablets.

Group 2 cadets, however, did a short exercise and briefing on Ground Team skills, including using the Elper to find an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT). The cadets' mission was to find an activated ELT that had been hidden around the airport.

Once the ELT had been found, groups 1 and 2 switched tasks.

At about 17:30 p.m., the pilots flew the cadets who hadn’t had an orientation ride yet. The other cadets either stayed at the airport and changed into PT clothes, or went to the armory (where the out-of-town cadets were staying for the night) to unpack and change for dinner.

At about 18:30 most o-rides were done, so all cadets went to dinner at Cici’s Pizza to eat and get to know the cadets from out-of-town squadrons.

Last but not least, all cadets headed over to the Plex (a great family fun entertainment center) to round up the day, ride go-karts, play golf, drive bumper boats and take turns at arcade games.

The cadets enjoyed playing, getting to know each other, and doing really fun activities with them.

At around 21:30 p.m., all headed back for the armory to get some rest, as Air Tracker in Olney, Texas was on the agenda for the following day.
