Change of Command at Texas Wing, Civil Air Patrol
This ceremony, rich in time-honored military tradition, was carried out with the change of command when
Colonel Joe Smith becomes the 20th commander to assume command of Texas Wing on April 14, 2007. The passing
of the Texas Wing Flag from outgoing commander Colonel Robert F. Eldridge, to the incoming commander marks the
transfer of command of the wing. Such ceremonies do much to reinforce the military ethos, discipline, and esprit
de corps, which have served the U.S. Air Force and Civil Air Patrol well.
Texas Wing has been under the command of Colonel Eldridge since September of 2003. The ceremony heralded a new
era for Texas Wing; four words are spoken in all. "Sir, I assume command" But, in those few words we begin anew.
For Col Smith it heralds the beginning of a challenging tour of duty.
In a brief address, Colonel Smith expressed his pride at being selected to take over the command of the wing,
particularly at this time. As Texas Wing continues to transition as it becomes one of the most important wings
within Civil Air Patrol, with the complexity of today’s mission, the challenge for each and every one of the men
and women who volunteers here every day
